The medical technology sector has already shed thousands of jobs this year, continuing a top industry trend from 2023.
Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson were among a long list of companies that eliminated positions last year to cut costs as the economy continued to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to macroeconomic and supply chain pressures.
Even as companies report sales growth and a return to form, announcements that positions will be eliminated continue to roll in. Zimmer Biomet, Medtronic, Dexcom and Baxter are among the large medtechs that have filed plans to cut employees this year. Smaller companies have also turned to layoffs to reduce costs, including Osso VR and Cue Health. Cue ultimately shut down the entire company.
