A steady drumbeat of job cuts across the medtech industry has continued through year-end.
In the final months of 2024, Masimo, Smith & Nephew, Embecta, Thermo Fisher, Acutus, 23andMe, Boston Scientific and Hologic were among the companies eliminating positions.
Edwards Lifesciences also adds to the long list of layoffs with its plans to cut more than 500 employees in a global realignment after selling its critical care business to BD.
In some cases, staff reductions have been tied to facility closings. Diagnostic test maker Cepheid, for example, consolidated some manufacturing operations in California this summer, letting go of more than 600 people.
The latest announcements continue a top industry trend from 2023. A MedTech Dive analysis of state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification databases found that medical device companies announced layoffs for more than 14,000 employees between Jan. 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.
Last year, Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson were among a long list of companies that reduced positions to cut costs as they continued to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and dealt with macroeconomic and supply chain pressures.
