Name: Carlton Weatherby
New title: Chief strategy officer, Inspire Medical Systems
Previous title: Vice president and general manager of the spine and biologics business at Medtronic
Inspire Medical Systems, which sells a neurostimulation device to treat obstructive sleep apnea, said Monday it named Weatherby to the post of chief strategy officer, effective immediately.
Weatherby joins Minneapolis-based Inspire from Medtronic, where he was vice president and general manager of the spine and biologics business for the past two years. Before that, he served as vice president of strategic sales and held various roles in corporate development since joining Medtronic in 2011.
Inspire’s device is the only neurostimulation technology approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. The device, implanted under the skin in the upper chest, delivers pulses via a lead to the tongue nerve to keep the patient’s airway open. It is designed for people who cannot use, or do not get consistent benefits from a continuous positive airway pressure machine.
CEO Tim Herbert said Weatherby will help guide the company as it continues to scale up its business. Inspire opened 68 new implant centers in the U.S. during the first quarter, bringing its total to 973 facilities, and recently received an expanded indication to treat patients with higher body mass index measures.
“I am thrilled to be joining Inspire at such an exciting inflection point in the company’s maturation,” Weatherby said. “I look forward to shaping the company’s strategy in the years to come and contributing to Inspire’s mission of serving the many patients with untreated [obstructive sleep apnea].”
Inspire was spun out of Medtronic in 2007.
Weatherby received his Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 2011 and his Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from Stanford University in 2007.
