Name: Essex Mitchell
New title: Chief Operating Officer, Hologic
Previous title: Division President, GYN Surgical Solutions, Hologic
Hologic has promoted Essex Mitchell to the position of chief operating officer effective Jan. 1, 2024.
Eric Compton, a former Johnson & Johnson executive, became Hologic’s first COO in 2014. Compton left the company at the end of 2017 and remained a consultant throughout 2018.
Hologic eliminated the COO position in 2017 and reinstated it with Mitchell’s promotion, a Hologic spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Mitchell joined Hologic as vice president of sales and commercial excellence for the GYN surgical division in 2017. Three years later, Hologic made Mitchell the president of the GYN surgical solutions division.
Talking to investors on a quarterly results conference call in May, Hologic CEO Stephen MacMillan said Mitchell had “dramatically strengthened” the U.S. business and made the “great acquisitions of Acessa [Health] and Bolder [Surgical].”
The promotion follows a quarter in which Hologic’s GYN surgical division grew 11% to $148 million. GYN surgical revenues totaled $604.2 million in the company’s fiscal year 2023, making the business nearly 40% larger than it was in 2019.
“MyoSure, our Fluent system and our newer laparoscopic products that we acquired via Bolder and Acessa are projected to continue to drive growth. Internationally, surgical also continues to shine. Surgical is clearly emerging as a strong and profitable growth driver,” MacMillan said on a quarterly results conference call with investors last month.
Before joining Hologic, Mitchell worked for Stryker, where he held various roles of increasing responsibility, leading sales and marketing in multiple divisions.
