Boston Scientific will close Silk Road Medical’s headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, after it bought the maker of stroke prevention products in September.
Spokesperson Chanel Hastings wrote in an email on Monday that Boston Scientific decided to close the Sunnyvale facility and consolidate all work at Silk Road’s facility in Plymouth, Minnesota.
The closure will affect 138 people employed at the facility, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing. The layoffs will start on Dec. 31 and continue until the second quarter of 2025.
Hastings said affected employees can apply for open roles within Boston Scientific, and the company will relocate people selected for a job in Minnesota. The WARN filing did not provide a list of affected jobs.
Boston Scientific bought Silk Road for $1.18 billion, following a review by the Federal Trade Commission. The company makes a device used in a minimally invasive procedure to treat plaque buildup in the carotid arteries in the neck.
At the time, Boston Scientific said the acquisition would allow the company to offer a treatment option that can reduce the risk of stroke and lead to improved patient outcomes. Hastings said Boston Scientific chose to consolidate the facility because it “helps us align products, technologies and resources to best support our business strategies, meet market demands and ultimately enhance our capabilities to deliver even greater value to our customers and their patients.”
The company initially told employees about the plan to transfer work from California to Minnesota after the acquisition closed in September, Hastings wrote.
