Dive Brief:
- CMR Surgical CEO Supratim Bose is stepping down for personal reasons to return to Singapore, less than two years after joining the robotics company.
- Massimiliano Colella was named interim CEO, as Bose transitions to vice chairman of the board, the company said Wednesday.
- The changes come amid a recent overhaul of CMR’s leadership, and as the company works to accelerate adoption of its Versius robot and disrupt a market long dominated by Intuitive Surgical.
Dive Insight:
Bose joined CMR in February 2023 as a senior adviser to the CEO and was appointed chief executive one month later, taking over for Per Vegard Nerseth.
During Bose’s tenure, the number of cases performed with the company’s Versius robot continued to grow. The portable, modular system has been used in more than 26,000 procedures across specialties such as colorectal surgery, gynecology, general surgery and urology, CMR said.
In recent months, CMR has pushed into new markets with its first installation in Portugal and an agreement to distribute the robot in Denmark, Norway and Finland.
Colella joined CMR as chief commercial officer in late 2023 from Evercare Group, where he oversaw hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centers as group CEO and board member. Before that, Colella held senior executive roles at Johnson & Johnson and Smith & Nephew.
Cambridge, U.K.-based CMR has made a series of leadership appointments over the past six months. In September, CMR said it hired Markus Bauman, formerly with Atomico Expert Network, as chief legal and business affairs officer; and Michelle Paknad, from Smith & Nephew, as senior vice president for global business development.
Daniel Moore, previously chairman of Livanova, was named non-executive chairman of CMR’s board in July, and Shlomi Cohen joined the robot maker as CFO in May from Lumenis.
Moore, in the company’s statement, said the board continues to support CMR for the long-term to ensure it can reach its full potential, and he welcomed Colella as interim CEO.
“Given his significant MedTech leadership experience, and passion for CMR and the surgical robotics industry, we are pleased to have someone of his stature take over the leadership of CMR,” Moore said of Colella’s appointment.
